anyone ever try using sector antenna's on gmrs. these are widely used on 802.11 stuff.
you could have a master Tx antenna like a DB-404. and use some kind of sector antenna's hooked to individual receivers and a voter(all at the same site) for the receive. such antenna's can be down tilted to improve portable reception in valleys.
any comments?

what would really neat is to employ what cell sites use. Remote electrical tilt.
they vary the electrical downtilt based on received signal strength.
as far as i know there would/should be no regulatory issues on this type of setup.

Have you SEEN any sector antennas for ~460 MHz? If so, go for it. If not, break out the homebrew book and a good antenna analyzer. In your quest for a miracle antenna, there's no sense blowing your equipment because of poor electrical design!

yep did a search in google today and found one that covers 450-470 with 12dbi gain and a 65 deg. beamwidth.
Not so much of a quest as much as i just like to experiment for the sake of experimenting.

Don't pick 462.625! I'm in the process of putting up a repeater which will cover out that way and will be quite active (built for a purpose). Also, the Hunterdon County repeater will blow you away out of Flemington, that's on .725.

i know there is a flemington one on 675 owned by M&W. when i asked chip about it he wanted to steer me to one of his part 90 uhf repeaters even though i was specifically looking for gmrs.
it will be down the road from ESPN 1040 am in kingwood if you can recommend a pair for that area.

Steerable antenna system is basically what you are doing.
It's expensive to do it right, but no reason not to play with the idea.
You could easily do the same thing with a couple of Yagi antennas and a voting receiver set up. Just set it up to select the antenna/receiver with the best S/N ratio. It could help hand held coverage quite a bit, if that was your goal.

well that is an idea that would not work anyway as i believe cell sites use RSSI to steer the antenna.
i have only seen these made for 800/1900 mhz cell bands.
but i guess a voter with some maxtrac's and sector antenna's would probably do the trick.
the antenna's i have seen are 65 degree beam width, so we would be looking at 5 or 6 antenna/receiver combo's.
i bet this setup would be good for eliminating duplexer loss as well. the sector antenna's would have better isolation from the tx antenna possibly negating the need for a duplexer.

In my experience in my area here, the HT ends up losing the repeater's transmitter before the repeater loses the HT. Improving your receive would be great but you'll hear the HT and they won't hear the repeater. Normally the repeater goes much further and your HT is the weakest link, but around here I'm finding that's not so much the case. If anything, they're pretty neck-and-neck. It's probably a product of the repeater setup and the local terrain.
