(Calvert County, MD 021009 PenguinSix) – An interesting point of view posted at the PenguinSix blog this week. Many of us saw this coming. PenguinSix probably saw a lot more than I did. I knew the popularity of satellite radio had diminished incredible in the last few years – even before the merger of XM and Sirius. When XM raised its monthly fee from $9.99 to $12.00 I jumped ship. It seemed to me that lots of others missed the value.
XM and Sirius actually turned out to be aimed at highway travelers more than anyone else. Home use never caught on like I had hoped. My suspicion is most folks are listening to uninterrupted music on their Ipods. The iPod and convenient accessory jacks on car radios helped marginalize satellite radio. Having never owned or sold an iPhone to music savvy customers I cannot speak to the opinion on PenguinSix.
PenguinSix begins, ” When I published my thoughts on how the iPhone would kill Sirius / XM, I was linked in the Sirius XM financial messageboards (probably by some shorts). Needless to say some of the longs went after me screaming ‘this guy is a moron’ and some other harshness. Even today when I talk about how amazing it is to play radio on my iPhone, I get some radio purists come in an whine ‘but but but, HD radio is better because…’ or something like that. (It reminds me of the guy who told me mp3’s would never take off because they didn’t sound as good as CDs).”
